Darker Underbelly of Indian Society
64Do you feel euphoric about shinning Indian society? Of course there are reasons… increasing openness, growing financial power, carefree lifestyle, western outfits etc… that can make anybody happy and positive,
Unfortunately, these reasons are sufficient enough to project the golden face of society.
If you are also carried away by this euphoria…just hold on… and sift through the following:
· India carries a dubious distinction of obese capital of the world.
· Indian society is grappling with high rates of child marriages, maternal mortality rates and child mortality rates
· Condition of females in countryside is pathetic.
These are just a tip of the whole iceberg which exhibits hidden face of Indian society. Actually, what we see is the glossy face only and forget to delve some deeper where the reality may be altogether different.
Nowadays, there is much hype about women empowerment. You can also name many women doing well in their respective fields ranging from police to politics to social work, Meera Nayar, Kiran Bedi, Brinda Karat etc. to name a few.
But… what percentage these women constitute of the whole population? Negligible… just miniscule. Who will be responsible for million others still spending their day facing domestic violence and negligence in this male dominated society? I wonder how we can overlook this bitter and bigger face while simply concentrating on the smaller subset.
Well, I am not denying the fact that some women are really successful but these benefits should trickle down to lower strata, to masses also which is unfortunately not the case as of now.
Similar is the case with children… so called “future of the country”, “face of the country”. They are in a very sorry state of affairs. They are working in hazardous industries, they are being married forcefully, being killed for honor, being abused, they are victims of domestic violence and hell lot of other unpleasant things.
Discussing this way, there are n number of things which we can mention about Indian society depicting the true reality behind the slogan” shining India”.
But our concern is not just limited to mentioning the darker area. We are here to provide solutions as well. It’s not that we don’t have solutions. Leaving aside agencies and Government, at individual level also we can bring out some change. You must have heard “charity begins at home”… same thing applies here.
Take proper care of children, respect women. If you are interested in social work, you can join some NGOs working for betterment of vulnerable sections.
Some other ways you can find out yourself and make a change to their so-called destiny!

i totally don't agree with your facts in the hub.i think you forgot to produced one fact here that India got independence just 65 years ago and this period is almost negligible in count of history. what developed nation are today are because of their loot and plunder from the countries like India. Now they say themselves developed and India as third world country. But they forgot that this under development is by their heinous deeds in all over the world.
Ok lets time pass and once again worlsd will see a Shining India.

Rated up, useful, awesome, beautiful, and interesting. There is a growing middle class in India, and like you say, more and more women are gaining more equality in the cities. But in the countryside, for example, we still see Sati existing, and other things that show us equality is a mirage. Loved the honesty of your hub!
I wrote a hub on the caste system which contributes to the issues in India as well. Find it here if you're interested: http://faceless39.hubpages.com/hub/The-Indian-Cast
